DM for order full form and meaning, and DM to order
A DM is a private conversation; comments and Story replies are public or semi-public. “DM for order” and “DM to order” both tell a buyer to message the seller instead of checking out on a website, and “DM for price” means the price is sent in chat. People also write “DMs” for the inbox itself (“check your DMs”).
For a seller, a DM is an enquiry with intent: the buyer has picked one product and asked about it. The rest of this page is about answering it well.
Reply templates for a price DM
Save these as quick replies in Instagram’s business tools and fill the brackets each time. Answer what was asked first; a reply that only says “check WhatsApp” loses buyers who wanted the price.

When to move the chat from Instagram DM to WhatsApp
Instagram DMs are fine for the first questions. Move to WhatsApp when the buyer asks about size, colour or payment, if that is where you keep your catalog, payment details and order messages. A WhatsApp chat link (wa.me followed by your number with the country code) opens a chat with you in one tap; add a short message naming the product so you know what they saw. A catalog link works the same way: our WhatsApp catalogue maker builds one from your product photos.
Whichever app you use, keep the order in one chat: the summary, the buyer’s “yes”, and the tracking number. That chat is your record if a parcel is disputed.
Meesho sellers: a DM order is not a Meesho order
Many Meesho sellers also sell on Instagram. Keep the two apart. An order you take in a DM is your own sale: your price, your courier, your payment. A Meesho order goes through Meesho, and Meesho’s penalty lesson says a seller who sends a Meesho order to the customer directly is charged ₹5,000 and may have the account deactivated (Meesho learning hub, read 4 Oct 2026). So never move a buyer from a Meesho order to a DM deal.
Selling on Instagram from scratch, from the first post to the first sale, is covered in how to sell on Instagram in India.
Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of DM on Instagram?
DM stands for Direct Message: the private chat inside Instagram between two accounts or a small group. Only the people in the chat see it, unlike comments on a post.
What does "DM for order" mean?
DM for order means "send me a direct message to place an order"; the full form of DM is Direct Message. The seller takes the order in private chat instead of through a shop checkout. "DM to order" means the same thing; "DM for price" asks you to message for the price.
Is it "DM to order" or "DM for order"?
Both are used and both mean "message us to order". "DM to order" reads more naturally in English; "DM for order" is common on Indian seller pages.
Can I take a Meesho order in Instagram DMs?
No. An order you take in a DM is your own order, outside Meesho. A Meesho order must go through Meesho: Meesho’s penalty lesson says a seller who sends a Meesho order to the customer directly is charged ₹5,000 and may have the account deactivated (read 4 Oct 2026).
Should I take the order on Instagram DM or move to WhatsApp?
Either works; move once the buyer asks about size, colour or price if you keep your catalog and order messages on WhatsApp. Send the order summary in whichever chat the buyer will reply in.
What is a Message request on Instagram?
A DM from an account you do not follow usually arrives in Message requests, a separate list from your main chats. Buyers are often new accounts, so check Requests every day and accept the chat to reply.
