When buying fabric from a shop, always ask for the panna width (fabric roll width). Indian textiles typically come in:
- 36 inches (Chota Panna): Traditional pure silk, cotton handlooms. Requires buying more meters since panels are narrower.
- 44 inches (Standard Panna): Most synthetic fabrics (georgette, chiffon, net). This is the standard our calculator uses.
- 54–60 inches (Bada Panna): Modern fabrics, furnishing textiles. You typically need 15–20% less length since front and back panels can be cut side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much fabric is needed for a salwar suit?
A standard salwar suit requires approximately 4.5 meters for small/medium sizes and 5.0 to 5.5 meters for large/XL sizes. This includes fabric for kameez, salwar, and dupatta.
Does fabric width affect how much cloth I need to buy?
Yes. Standard fabric rolls are 44 inches wide. If you buy 60-inch wide fabric, you can often save 15–20% on total meters since the tailor can cut front and back panels side by side.
How many yards are in a meter of cloth?
1 meter = 1.09 yards. So 5 meters = approximately 5.5 yards. Our calculator shows results in both meters and yards.
