Saree length in feet

A 6 yard saree is 18 feet long: 5.5 m ÷ 0.3048 m per foot. With the blouse piece woven on, the length is 21.3 feet, and a 9 yard Nauvari is 27.1 feet. To check a saree at home, open it out along the floor and measure from the plain end to the tip of the pallu.

Saree meter with blouse

A saree sold with a blouse piece is woven as one length of 6.5 m: the 5.5 m saree and a 1 m blouse piece at the end, often in a contrast colour or plain weave. Cut the blouse piece along the line where the pattern changes before you drape the saree.

1 m covers an elbow-sleeve blouse up to a 36 in bust. Full sleeves need 1.25 m at that size and up to 1.75 m at 43 in and above, so buy a matching piece separately when the attached one falls short. Every size is in the blouse fabric measurement guide.

12 hath saree in meters, 6 vari and 6 yards

A 12 hath saree is the standard 5.5 m saree. Shops that measure cloth by hand quote hath (haat), a forearm length; we take a hath as 18 in, so 12 hath is the 6 yard saree. In Marathi the same saree is 6 vari, because a vari is a yard. A Nauvari is 9 vari, 18 hath or 8.25 m, and a saree with blouse piece about 14.2 hath. Hand measures vary with the arm, so check a hath-quoted length against a tape.

Draping style does not change the 6 yard length: nivi, seedha pallu and Bengali drapes differ in where the pleats and pallu go. Only the Nauvari needs more, because a third of it is tucked back between the legs. For a length quoted in some other count of hath, vari or yards, the saree calculator converts it to metres and feet.

Saree width in inches

There is no single standard width. Handloom and power-loom sarees differ, and the seller prints the width on the tag or in the product listing (sometimes as "panna"). To check it yourself, lay the saree flat and measure straight across from one selvedge (the woven edge) to the other, away from the pallu. Width does not change the metres you buy, because a saree is woven to length; it changes how deep the pleats sit at your ankle.

Saree length for tall women

A 5.5 m saree drapes on most heights. For a wearer taller than 5 ft 5 in, our calculator adds 0.5 m, giving 6 m, so the pleats are not cut short and the pallu still reaches the hip. Since sarees are sold at fixed lengths, that usually means choosing a saree whose blouse piece you will not use, or one sold at extra length. Drapes and blouses that suit height are in saree for tall women.

No. A saree is woven to length, so you buy one saree whatever its width. Width changes how deep the pleats sit and how much falls over the shoulder, not the metres.
