How to mark a boat neck blouse pattern
- Shoulder point: decide where the neck ends on the shoulder seam. A boat neck ends further out than a round neck; the further out, the wider it reads.
- Front depth: mark how far below the collarbone the line sits. A classic boat neck sits just below it; a deep boat neck is lower.
- The line: join the two shoulder points with a straight or very gently curved line. A strong curve turns it into a round neck.
- Back neck: cut the back lower than the front so the blouse does not ride up at the nape, then shape it as the back design you chose.
- Opening: front hooks break the clean line, so many boat neck blouses open at the back with hooks or a zip, or at the side.
- Trial: ask the tailor to try the neckline in muslin or an old blouse first; a wide neck that is too wide slips off the shoulder.
Your tailor takes the actual widths and depths from your measurements; we do not give fixed inches because they change with shoulder width and fit. To check fabric before cutting, use the blouse fabric calculator.

Boat neck blouse for heavy bust
A boat neck draws the eye across the shoulders, so cut wide it adds width at the top. For a heavy bust, keep it narrower (ending inside the shoulder point), a little deeper in front, with darts or princess seams for fit and elbow sleeves. A V neck is the other good choice. Narrow shoulders suit a boat neck well; broad shoulders do better with a V or sweetheart neck. The full body-shape guide is on the blouse neck designs, front and back page.
Boat neck with collar
A flat or band collar sewn along the boat neck edge gives a neat, formal finish for office wear on cotton, raw silk or khadi. Keep the back simple, such as a keyhole with one button at the nape, so the collar stays the focus.

What is a boat neck blouse pattern?
A front neckline that runs straight across the collarbone from one shoulder to the other and stays high in front, with the back usually cut lower. A round neck curves down at the centre; a boat neck stays almost level.
How do I explain a boat neck to my tailor?
Ask for a straight boat neck that ends on the shoulder where you want it, give the front depth you want against your collarbone, and say which back neck goes with it. Ask the tailor to mark the line on you or on a muslin trial before cutting the silk.
Is a boat neck blouse good for a heavy bust?
It can be, if it is not cut wide. A wide boat neck adds width across the top; a narrower, slightly deeper boat neck with darts or princess seams and elbow sleeves balances it. A V neck is the other option.
Which back neck goes with a boat neck blouse?
Because the front is high, most boat necks pair with a lower back: classic U or keyhole for daily wear, pot neck, deep V, dori or net back for weddings and receptions.
Can I wear a necklace with a boat neck blouse?
Yes. Choose a choker that sits above the neckline or a long haar that falls below it; a short pendant that lands on the edge of the neckline looks cut off.
