How Much Curtain Fabric Do I Need? Calculate It in Meters

Curtain fabric = number of fabric widths × (drop + 12 in), where widths = window width × fullness ÷ roll width, rounded up. For an 84 in (7.0 ft) drop at 2x fullness:

How to calculate curtain fabric in meters

  1. Measure the width of the rod or track, not the glass, in inches.
  2. Measure the drop from the rod to where the curtain should end: sill, below the sill, or floor.
  3. Pick a fullness. 2x means the flat fabric is twice the rod width before it is gathered or pleated.
  4. Count the widths: rod width × fullness ÷ roll width, rounded up. Each width is one full-length piece (a drop) of fabric.
  5. Work out the length: widths × (drop + 12 in). Divide by 39.37 for metres, or by 36 for yards.

Worked example (the calculator's default): a 60 in rod at 2x is 120 in of flat fabric. On a 54 in roll that is 120 ÷ 54 = 2.22, so 3 widths. Each is 84 + 12 = 96 in long, so the window takes 3 × 96 = 288 in: 8.0 yd or 7.3 m.

Curtain fabric calculator: fullness from 1.5x to 3x

Same 60 in window and 84 in drop, on a 54 in roll:

FullnessWidthsYardsMeters
1.5x25.3 yd4.9 m
2x38.0 yd7.3 m
2.5x38.0 yd7.3 m
3x410.7 yd9.8 m

The fabric jumps in whole widths, so two fullness settings can need the same metres. Light sheer and net fabric is usually gathered fuller; heavy fabric with eyelets hangs well at a lower fullness.

Fabric width for curtains: 44 in or 54 in

A wider roll can cover the window in fewer widths. For a 48 in window, a 54 in roll needs 2 widths (4.9 m) and a 44 in roll needs 3 (7.3 m). For the 60 in default window both need 3 widths (7.3 m), because the count rounds up to whole widths; that is why the table above has some equal pairs. 44 in is 3.67 ft (1.12 m) and 54 in is 4.49 ft (1.37 m). Ask the shop for the roll width before you work out the metres; the calculator itself assumes 54 in.

Frequently asked questions

How much curtain fabric do I need?

For a 60 in (5.0 ft) wide window with an 84 in drop at 2x fullness, you need 3 widths of 54 in fabric, each 96 in long: 8.0 yd or 7.3 m in total (StitchMagic calculator defaults).

How do I calculate curtain fabric in meters?

Multiply the window width by the fullness and divide by the fabric width; round up to get the number of widths (drops). Multiply that by the drop plus 12 in for hem and heading, then convert inches to metres by dividing by 39.37.

What fullness should curtains have?

The calculator offers 1.5x, 2x, 2.5x and 3x, with 2x as its default. Higher fullness gives deeper folds and needs more widths of fabric; light sheer fabric is usually gathered fuller than heavy fabric.

What is 1.12 m and 1.37 m in feet?

1.12 m is 3.67 ft, the width of a 44 in roll. 1.37 m is 4.49 ft, the width of a 54 in roll. 1 ft = 12 in and 1 m = 39.37 in.

Does the calculation include lining or pattern repeat?

No. Lining is a second set of the same widths in lining fabric. For a patterned fabric, round each cut length up to a whole number of pattern repeats; the repeat is printed on the label or the shop can tell you.
