Garment costing software or a costing calculator?
Costing software for a factory tracks bills of materials, orders and stock across styles. For one style at a time, a boutique or a small unit needs four numbers per piece, and this calculator adds them in the browser with nothing to install: fabric, trims and accessories, labour (CMT: cutting, making, trimming) and overhead. Cost per piece = fabric + trims + labour + overhead. On the defaults that is ₹300 + ₹50 + ₹120 + ₹40 = ₹510, and the bar under the total shows material (fabric plus trims, ₹350) as 69% of it. Replace each default with your own figure; the total updates as you type.
Fabric cost calculator: metres per piece x rate per metre
Fabric cost per piece = metres of fabric one piece uses x the price you pay per metre. For example, 2.5 m at ₹120 a metre is ₹300, the calculator’s default (an illustration, not a market rate). Take the metres from your own cutting layout or from StitchMagic’s fabric calculator for the garment, and add the cutting waste you actually see on your table rather than a rule of thumb. If you buy fabric by the kilogram, convert with the fabric’s GSM and width before you multiply.
Labour (CMT) and overhead per piece
Labour is what you pay to cut, stitch and finish one piece: either your tailor’s per-piece rate, or the minutes the piece takes x the hourly rate ÷ 60. For example, 40 minutes at ₹180 an hour is ₹120, the default. Overhead is the monthly cost that does not belong to one piece (rent, electricity, machine upkeep, packing) divided by the pieces you make that month: for example ₹8,000 ÷ 200 pieces = ₹40. Make fewer pieces and the same overhead weighs more on each one: ₹8,000 over 100 pieces is ₹80 a piece.
From cost per piece to a selling price
Margin is measured on the selling price, markup on the cost, and they give different prices. A 40% margin on a ₹510 cost is ₹510 ÷ (1 − 0.40) = ₹850; a 40% markup is ₹510 x 1.40 = ₹714. GST goes on top of a price quoted before tax: garments sold at up to ₹2,500 a piece carry 5% GST and above that 18% (56th GST Council, effective 22 Sept 2025), so ₹850 becomes ₹892.50 to the buyer. If you sell through a marketplace, its commission and shipping come off that price too, so work them in before you fix the number.
