Answer: an A-line lehenga on 44 in fabric at 40 in length needs 3 m for the skirt. Add 1 m for the blouse and 2.5 m for the dupatta: 6.5 m for the set. A 24 kali skirt on the same fabric needs 6.75 m.

How many meters for a lehenga skirt, by style
Skirt only, at 40 in length and a 30 in waist. Ghera is the hem round; it is not the fabric you buy.
| Style | 36 in roll | 44 in roll | 60 in roll | Ghera |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A-line | 4 m | 3 m | 2.5 m | depends on cut |
| Umbrella (full circle) | 6 m | 5 m | 4 m | depends on cut |
| 12 kali | 6.75 m | 3.5 m | 3.5 m | 4.9 m |
| 16 kali | 6.75 m | 4.5 m | 3.5 m | 5.7 m |
| 24 kali | 6.75 m | 6.75 m | 4.5 m | 7.3 m |
Kali rows are computed from a cutting layout, so a wider roll only helps when an extra kali fits across it: 12 kali needs 3 rows on both 44 in and 60 in fabric, and on a 36 in roll only 2 to 4 kalis fit across, so every kali count above needs 6 rows.
How much fabric needed for 16 kali and 24 kali lehenga
A kali is one tapered panel of the skirt: narrow at the waist, wide at the hem. Tailors cut kalis head-to-tail so two panels share the width of the roll. On 44 in fabric, 4 kalis of a 24 kali skirt fit across, so 24 kalis take 6 rows. Each row is the skirt length plus 3 in for waistband and hem (43 in), which gives 6.75 m. On 60 in fabric 7 fit across and it falls to 4.5 m.
A 16 kali skirt also fits 4 kalis across a 44 in roll, so it takes 4 rows and 4.5 m. The full method, with the formula and a 12 and 16 kali table, is in the lehenga kali guide.
How much cloth is required for lehenga choli
A lehenga choli set is three pieces. The calculator adds 1 m for an elbow-sleeve blouse (bust up to 36 in on 36 in fabric) and 2.5 m for the dupatta. For a full-sleeve or larger blouse, use the blouse fabric calculator and swap in its figure. Lining (usually cotton or butter crepe) and the can-can are separate purchases. Which material suits each part is in the lehenga fabric material guide.
How to use the lehenga calculator
- Pick the skirt style: A-line, umbrella, or the kali count your tailor quoted.
- Ask the shop for the roll width in inches and pick 36, 44 or 60.
- Enter the skirt length from waist to floor with the heels you will wear.
- For kali styles, enter the waist. Buy the total shown; it is already rounded up to the next 0.25 m.
Common mistakes when buying lehenga fabric
- Buying for the skirt only. The blouse and dupatta add 3.5 m to any style.
- Ignoring length. Every extra inch of length is added to every row of kalis, so a tall wearer on a 24 kali skirt needs 7.25 m at 44 in length instead of 6.75 m.
- Assuming 60 in always saves cloth. It saves only when another kali fits across the roll; check the table.
- Directional prints. Kalis cut head-to-tail turn every other panel upside down. With a one-way print, ask the tailor to cut all kalis the same way and buy an extra row.
Frequently asked questions
How much fabric is required for a lehenga?
For an A-line lehenga skirt at 40 in length on 44 in fabric, the calculator gives 3 m. With a 1 m blouse and a 2.5 m dupatta the full set is 6.5 m. An umbrella skirt needs 5 m and a 24 kali skirt 6.75 m on the same fabric (StitchMagic tool defaults).
Is 5 meter lehenga fabric material enough?
Five metres covers the skirt alone for A-line (3 m), 16 kali (4.5 m) or umbrella (5 m) on 44 in fabric. It does not cover skirt, blouse and dupatta together; for that, plan 6.5 m or more.
How much fabric is needed for a 24 kali lehenga?
6.75 m for the skirt on 44 in fabric at 40 in length and 30 in waist: 4 kalis fit across the roll, so 24 kalis take 6 rows of 43 in. On 60 in fabric it drops to 4.5 m. Add 1 m blouse and 2.5 m dupatta for the set (10.25 m).
How many meters of cloth are required for a lehenga skirt?
Between 3 m (A-line) and 6.75 m (24 kali) on 44 in fabric at 40 in length. Longer skirts and narrower rolls need more; enter your length and roll width in the calculator.
Does fabric width change how much lehenga cloth I need?
Yes. A-line needs 4 m on 36 in fabric, 3 m on 44 in and 2.5 m on 60 in. For kali skirts the saving depends on how many kalis fit across the roll, which the calculator works out.
