Answer: wholesale price = landed cost ÷ (1 − your margin). On the calculator's default, ₹280 cost + ₹50 overhead = ₹330; at a 30% margin you sell at ₹471 and keep ₹141 a piece, ₹7,050 on 50 pieces.

Textile business profit margin: start from landed cost

Landed cost is everything one piece costs you before it reaches the buyer: the purchase or making cost, plus packing, freight to you and to the buyer if you pay it, and storage. A margin set on the purchase price alone overstates profit by exactly that overhead: on the default, 30% on ₹280 instead of ₹330 would quote ₹400, ₹71 less a piece.

Wholesale margin vs wholesaler markup

The calculator works in margin, profit as a share of the selling price. Many traders quote markup instead, profit as a share of cost. On the default, ₹141 on a ₹471 price is a 30% margin and a 42.7% markup on ₹330. When a buyer or supplier says "30% margin", ask which one they mean before you agree a price.

Wholesale profit margin calculator: the retailer's side

The retail price is your wholesale price ÷ (1 − the retailer's margin). At 50%, ₹471 becomes ₹942 and the retailer keeps ₹471 a piece. Check that retail price against what the product sells for in shops and online; if it is too high, the margin has to come out of your price or the retailer's.

Selling the same stock online

A marketplace sale has commission, shipping and tax deductions that a wholesale order does not. Before listing, run the price through the Meesho commission calculator or the Flipkart commission calculator to see the payout per order, and use the price per piece calculator guide to split a set or bulk lot into the cost of one piece. Before agreeing to a supplier's minimum order, the MOQ calculator shows the order size your costs break even at.

Wholesale margin questions

What is a good margin in textile business?

No official body publishes one, and margins differ by product, volume and who pays freight. Work from your own landed cost: on the calculator's default, ₹330 at a 30% wholesale margin is ₹471 a piece, ₹141 of profit.

How do I calculate wholesale margin?

Wholesale price = landed cost ÷ (1 − margin). Margin % = (wholesale price − landed cost) ÷ wholesale price x 100. ₹330 ÷ 0.7 = ₹471, and ₹141 ÷ ₹471 is a 30% margin.

How much margin does the retailer get?

Whatever the retail price leaves above your wholesale price. At a 50% retail margin, a ₹471 piece retails at ₹942 and the retailer keeps ₹471.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of cost. The default's ₹141 profit is a 30% margin on ₹471 but a 42.7% markup on ₹330.

Is GST included in the wholesale price?

No. Garments and made-up textiles carry 5% GST up to ₹2,500 a piece and 18% above (56th GST Council, PIB, retrieved 4 Oct 2026), so the default ₹471 wholesale and ₹942 retail prices both take 5%. Fabric sold by the metre has its own rate by HSN code.
