Lehenga fabric material: which fabric for which look

Pick the skirt material by the shape you want. A soft drape suits a skirt with many kalis or an umbrella cut, because every seam has to fall cleanly; a crisp, heavy fabric holds a fuller shape on its own. The notes below quote two fabric guides written by ethnic-wear sellers, not a standard.

MaterialHow it fallsUse it for
GeorgetteMedium-light; "structured yet fluid" drape that takes the shape of the bodyKali and umbrella skirts that should move
NetVery light to carry and see-through; holds heavy embroidery and makes a grand silhouetteFull-flared and bridal skirts, over a lining
Raw silkCrisp texture with a stiff look that adds fullnessA skirt that should stand out from the body
Banarasi (brocade)Rich brocade with zari and real weight; a traditional full-flared lookBridal and festive skirts with little extra embroidery
VelvetHeavy, with a plush pile; lycra velvet is the lighter kindWinter weddings
ChanderiLightweight and semi-transparent, with a sheenSummer and festive day wear

Our take: raw silk cut into 24 narrow kalis stands away from the body, so put it into an A-line or a skirt with fewer kalis, and keep georgette or net for the many-kali skirt. Net is see-through, so it needs a lining under it. With velvet or a one-way print, cut every panel the same way up and buy one extra row.

Metres for each part of a lehenga set

Skirt shell by cut on 44 in cloth at 40 in length, with the other parts added. The choli column is an elbow-sleeve choli for a bust up to 36 in; the blouse fabric measurement guide has every bust and sleeve.

Lehenga dupatta length in meters, and the choli

The dupatta is 2.5 m in our calculators, bought as a finished woven length, so it does not change with the roll width. The choli runs from 0.8 m for a sleeveless choli up to a 36 in bust to 1.75 m for full sleeves at 43 in and above, on 36 in cloth. If the choli is cut from the skirt fabric, add its metres to the skirt before you buy, so the print and colour come from one lot.

Lining and can-can for a lehenga

Buy the lining in the same length and roll width as the skirt shell, because it is cut from the same pattern. The can-can is a ready-made net petticoat that holds the skirt out; it is not cut from your cloth. Common mistakes: buying shell fabric only, quoting the ghera (hem round) as the length to buy, and assuming a shop roll is 44 in when it is 36 in.

Lehenga fabric questions

What material is required for a lehenga?

Five parts: the skirt shell, a lining of the same length, the choli, a 2.5 m dupatta and a can-can bought ready-made. For the shell, georgette and net suit a skirt that flares and moves; raw silk and Banarasi give a stiffer, fuller look (Weaverstory lehenga fabric guide (Mar 2025) and Aza Fashions fabric guide (May 2026)).

Which fabric is best for a kali lehenga?

A fabric with a soft drape, because a kali skirt has many seams. Georgette has a "structured yet fluid" drape and takes the shape of the body; raw silk has a crisp, stiff look and stands away from the body when cut into narrow panels.

What is the lehenga dupatta length in meters?

2.5 m in our calculators. A dupatta is bought as a woven length, so the roll width does not change it (StitchMagic calculator defaults).

Does the material change how many metres I need?

Not in our calculator, which works from the cut, roll width, skirt length and waist. Velvet pile and one-way prints are the exception in practice: every panel must point the same way up, so buy one extra row.

Does the lehenga lining need extra fabric?

Yes. The lining is cut from the same pattern as the skirt, so buy the same length of lining as the skirt on the same roll width. The can-can (net petticoat) is bought separately.
