What is kali in lehenga? (meaning)
Kali in a lehenga means one tapered panel of the skirt: narrow at the waist, wide at the hem. A lehenga made this way is called a kalidar or kali wala lehenga. Sewn side by side, the panels make a cone that flares out. The hem round is the ghera. Fabric length is what you buy; ghera is how wide the finished skirt is at the floor. They are different numbers, and mixing them up is how a 7.3 m ghera turns into a wrong "buy 7.3 m" answer.
How many kali in lehenga and in a bridal lehenga
There is no fixed count. It is a design choice, and the ghera depends on both the count and the hem width of each kali. With the hem widths in the table, 12 kali gives a 4.9 m ghera, 16 kali 5.7 m and 24 kali 7.3 m. Heavier bridal skirts are usually made with more kalis. To work out other sizes, use the lehenga fabric calculator, which takes your length, waist and roll width.
How much fabric needed for 24 kali lehenga
The formula, in inches:
Fabric length = rows × (skirt length + 3 in)
rows = kalis ÷ kalis per row, rounded up
kalis per row = 2 × (usable width ÷ (hem width + top width)), rounded down, +1 if one more hem width fits
top width = waist ÷ kalis + 1 in seam; hem width = finished hem + 1 in seam; usable width = roll width − 1 in
Worked example: 24 kali, 44 in fabric, 40 in length, 30 in waist.
top width = 30 ÷ 24 + 1 = 2.25 in; hem width = 12 + 1 = 13 in
one head-to-tail pair = 13 + 2.25 = 15.25 in
usable width 43 in ÷ 15.25 in = 2 pairs = 4 kalis per row
24 ÷ 4 = 6 rows × 43 in = 258 in = 6.55 m
round up to the next 0.25 m = 6.75 m (skirt only)
On a 60 in roll, 7 kalis fit across, so the same skirt takes 4 rows and 4.5 m. A longer skirt adds length to every row: at 44 in length the 44 in-roll figure becomes 7.25 m.
How to cut kali lehenga
- Measure waist and length (waist to floor, with the footwear you will wear). Add 3 in to the length for waistband and hem.
- Draw one kali as a trapezoid: top = waist ÷ kalis + 1 in, bottom = hem per kali + 1 in, height = the cut length.
- Fold the fabric lengthwise only if the print allows; otherwise lay it flat, selvedge to selvedge.
- Place kalis head-to-tail across the width (waist of one beside the hem of the next) so pairs share the width.
- Cut one row, check the count per row matches the formula, then repeat for the remaining rows.
- With a one-way print, cut every kali the same way up and buy one extra row.
Lehenga kali fabric for the full set
| Kali count | Skirt (44 in) | Blouse | Dupatta | Set total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 kali | 3.5 m | 1 m | 2.5 m | 7 m |
| 16 kali | 4.5 m | 1 m | 2.5 m | 8 m |
| 24 kali | 6.75 m | 1 m | 2.5 m | 10.25 m |
The blouse figure is an elbow-sleeve blouse for a bust up to 36 in; for other sizes use the blouse fabric calculator. Lining and the can-can petticoat are bought separately. Which material suits a skirt with many kalis is in the lehenga fabric material guide.
Common mistakes: buying the ghera figure as fabric length; buying for the skirt only; assuming a 60 in roll always saves cloth (it saves only when another kali fits across, as with 24 kali above); and forgetting that a longer skirt adds to every row.
Kali lehenga questions
What is kali in lehenga?
A kali is one tapered panel of a lehenga skirt, narrow at the waist and wide at the hem. Sewing many kalis side by side gives the skirt its flare (ghera).
How much fabric is needed for a 24 kali lehenga?
6.75 m for the skirt on 44 in fabric at 40 in length and 30 in waist, or 4.5 m on 60 in fabric. With a 1 m blouse and 2.5 m dupatta the set needs 10.25 m on 44 in fabric (StitchMagic tool defaults).
How much fabric is needed for a 16 kali lehenga?
4.5 m for the skirt on 44 in fabric at 40 in length, with a ghera of 5.7 m. Four kalis fit across a 44 in roll, so 16 kalis take 4 rows.
How many kalis are in a bridal lehenga?
There is no fixed number; the count is a design choice. At the same hem width per kali, more kalis give a bigger ghera, which is why heavier bridal skirts are usually made with more kalis.
What is the difference between 12 kali and 24 kali lehenga?
With our defaults a 12 kali skirt has a 4.9 m ghera and needs 3.5 m of 44 in fabric; a 24 kali skirt has a 7.3 m ghera and needs 6.75 m. The 24 kali skirt also has twice as many seams.
24 kali lehenga me kitna kapda lagta hai?
44 inch panne par 40 inch lambai aur 30 inch kamar ke liye skirt me 6.75 m kapda lagta hai, 60 inch panne par 4.5 m. Blouse 1 m aur dupatta 2.5 m jodkar poora set 10.25 m (StitchMagic tool defaults).
