Saree meter size in every unit
| Saree | Metres | Yards | Feet | Hath |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 yard saree (nivi, Gujarati, Bengali drape) | 5.5 m | 6 | 18 | 12 |
| 6 yard saree with blouse piece | 6.5 m | 7.1 | 21.3 | 14.2 |
| 9 yard Nauvari saree | 8.25 m | 9 | 27.1 | 18 |
Conversions: 1 yard = 0.9144 m, 1 foot = 0.3048 m, 1 hath taken as 18 in. Taller than 5 ft 5 in? The calculator adds 0.5 m, our default allowance for deeper pleats.
Convert hath to metres
A hath (haat in Bengali) is the length from elbow to fingertip, an old measure some saree sellers still quote. At the usual 18 in a hath, 12 hath is 216 in, or 5.49 m. That is the same piece as a 6 yard saree. If the seller measures with their own arm, expect a few centimetres either way; ask for the length in metres on the tag. For standard saree lengths in feet and hath without converting, see saree length in feet and meters.
6 yards saree in meters, and 6 vari
Six yards is 6 × 0.9144 = 5.49 m, sold as a 5.5 m saree. "6 vari" is the same thing: vari means yard. The nivi, Gujarati seedha pallu and Bengali drapes all use this one length; only the pleating changes.
Nauvari saree length in meters
Nauvari means nine yards: 9 × 0.9144 = 8.23 m, which the calculator rounds up to 8.25 m. The extra three yards go into the kaccha tuck that passes between the legs.
Saree meter with blouse
Many sarees have the blouse piece woven at the end of the same length. Then the full piece is 6.5 m: 5.5 m to drape and 1 m to cut off for the blouse. Measure before cutting; if the piece is only 5.5 m, there is no blouse in it and you need to buy blouse fabric separately. The blouse fabric calculator gives the metres by bust and sleeve.
