Amazon product photography: the image rules and how to shoot them

How to shoot product photos that meet the image rules Amazon prints for sellers.

By StitchMagic team · Last checked 22 October 2026

Amazon product photography comes down to a white background, only the product in the picture, the product covering at least 80% of the image, and a file large enough to zoom, as Amazon’s own seller pages put it (read 22 Oct 2026). Six steps to a main image that meets them:

  1. 1

    Put the product on white

Amazon’s listing guide asks for product images with “a white background”. A white sheet or board in daylight is enough to start.

  2. 2

    Show only the product

No text, watermarks or props, in Amazon’s words. Take off price tags and keep the brand name for the listing text.

  3. 3

    Fill the frame

The guide says the product should “cover at least 80% of the image area”. Step in close and shoot square, so the edges are not empty.

  4. 4

    Shoot several angles

Amazon’s seller blog suggests “multiple image angles with model or mannequin images wherever possible”: front, back, side and a close-up.

  5. 5

    Export large enough to zoom

The blog asks for a white-background image of “at least 1006 pixels” so buyers can zoom. Our bulk marketplace resizer saves a 2000 × 2000 px Amazon square.

  6. 6

    Check before you upload

“Non-compliant images may lead to listing suppression”, the guide says. Compare each main image with steps 1 to 3 first.

What Amazon says about product images

Two pages on sell.amazon.in state image rules without a login (read 22 Oct 2026). Amazon’s full product image guidelines sit in Seller Central and need a seller account.

Amazon Global Selling listing guide

  • “Have a white background”
  • “Are at least 1000 dpi” (Amazon’s wording; read it as the pixel size of the longer side and check Seller Central)
  • “Show only the product (no text, watermarks, or props)”
  • “Cover at least 80% of the image area”
  • “Non-compliant images may lead to listing suppression.”

Amazon seller blog, best practices

  • A large white-background product image, “at least 1006 pixels”, so buyers can zoom
  • “Multiple image angles with model or mannequin images wherever possible”
  • “Follow Amazon’s product image guidelines” for the minimum requirements

The listing guide is written for Amazon Global Selling; for Amazon.in listings, the image rules in your Seller Central account take precedence over both pages.

Product photography for Amazon at home

Amazon prints the result it wants, not the set-up. This is the set-up we use; it is our method, not Amazon’s rule.

Backdrop

A white sheet or board taped to a wall and curved down onto the table, so there is no line behind the product.

Light

Daylight from a window, softened by a thin curtain. Switch off coloured room lights so the white stays white.

Camera

The phone’s rear camera in square mode, held on a stand or a stack of books, same distance for every product in a range.

Why we shoot square for Amazon

Our bulk resizer fits the whole photo into a 2000 × 2000 px white square without cropping. A 1500 × 2000 (3:4) phone photo lands at 1500 × 2000, so the photo itself covers 75% of the square, before counting the background around the product: below the 80% Amazon asks the product to cover. A square photo, cropped close, fills the whole square.

Amazon fashion photography

For clothing, Amazon’s seller blog suggests angles on a model or mannequin wherever possible (read 22 Oct 2026). We shoot the garment on a dress form or model from the front, back and side, plus a close-up of fabric or print, each on white.

Keep the main image to the product alone, as the listing guide asks: no text, watermark or props. Photo guides for other marketplaces: Myntra product photography, Meesho earrings photography and IndiaMART product images.

Fixing a suppressed Amazon listing image

Each line is one of the listing guide’s rules, with the fix we use.

Background is not white

Reshoot on a white sheet in daylight; a grey or cream wall shows as a coloured background.

Text, watermark or a prop in the main image

Remove it from the photo. Brand names and offers belong in the listing text.

Product covers less than 80% of the image

Crop close to the product, then resize a square crop so no white band is added around it.

Image too small to zoom

Export the original phone photo, not a WhatsApp copy, and resize it to the 2000 × 2000 px Amazon preset in the bulk marketplace resizer.

Then upload the new image in Seller Central and check the listing’s status there; Amazon does not publish how long a review takes.

Next step

Pricing the listing next? The Amazon seller calculator works out fees and margin; the Amazon label crop tool trims shipping labels once orders come in.

Amazon’s listing guide (sell.amazon.in, read 22 Oct 2026) asks for a white background, only the product with no text, watermarks or props, and the product covering at least 80% of the image area. Non-compliant images may lead to listing suppression.

What size should Amazon product photos be?

Amazon’s seller blog asks for a white-background image of at least 1006 pixels so buyers can zoom; the listing guide says “at least 1000 dpi”. We export a 2000 × 2000 px square, our resizer’s Amazon preset. Check the size rule in your Seller Central account.

Can I do Amazon product photography at home?

Yes. Amazon’s rules are about the result: white background, only the product, filling the frame. A white sheet, window daylight and a phone on a stand can meet them.

Does Amazon fashion photography need a model?

Amazon’s seller blog suggests model or mannequin images wherever possible, as extra angles. The main image still shows only the product on white.

Why was my Amazon product image suppressed?

Amazon’s listing guide says non-compliant images may lead to listing suppression. Check the main image against its rules: white background, no text, watermark or props, and the product covering at least 80% of the image.
