Wholesale saree market: which saree comes from where

Pick a saree by fibre first. Fibre fixes its tariff line; for registered sarees, IP India’s GI register names a home state.

Wholesale saree market in India: registered saree origins by state

India has no single saree mandi. What it keeps instead is an official list of saree names tied to places: IP India’s Geographical Indications register. Twelve rows below are copied as written, each with state plus application number, so you can search that register yourself.

Saree wholesale mein pehle fibre dekhiye: silk, cotton, polyester ya rayon. Usi se HSN line tay hoti hai, aur Banaras, Kancheepuram jaisi registered saree ka state GI register batata hai. Supplier se fibre likhit mein lijiye, phir catalogue banaiye.

A GI name on your listing claims registered origin. Before buying stock sold as Banaras Brocades, Kancheepuram Silk or Paithani, ask your supplier for proof of origin, since your catalogue prints that name.

City trading sits on our market pages: Surat wholesale cloth market, Kolkata cloth market, Jaipur market, Delhi cloth market. Each lists what to check during visits; none ranks shops.

How a saree’s fibre decides its HSN line and where registered sarees come from
Fibre first, then the tariff line; the GI register only for named sarees. GST portal and IP India, checked 23 Oct 2026.

Silk sarees wholesale: what to check before you pay

Fibre content, in writing

Silk saree line 5007 20 10 sits under fabric with 85% or more silk by weight (GST portal HSN master, read 11 Oct 2026). Anything below that cannot be invoiced as silk saree, so “art silk” or “soft silk” needs a fibre answer before any price answer.

Blouse piece attached?

Sarees sell folded but get judged unfolded. Confirm a blouse piece is attached, check its fabric matches, then write both facts into your listing.

Length: ask, then state it

Measure one piece from each lot; print that length in your description. Buyers plan drapes around length, so pieces shorter than stated come back.

Colourfastness on strong dyes

Bright cottons bleed; so do synthetics. If your supplier cannot say, add a cold-wash line to each listing rather than paying for returns.

Zari or stitched-on border

GST portal search shows separate “zari bordered sarees” lines: 5208 39 10, 5208 49 10, 5208 59 10, 5209 39 10 (checked 23 Oct 2026). So ask whether each border is woven zari. Then unfold samples fully: where borders are stitched on, joins fail first.

Saree wholesale for business: which channel suits which saree

Printed polyester or rayon sarees get bought through search: shoppers filter by fabric and colour, then sort by price. On Meesho, commission is 0% across all categories, while a saree return costs you a shipping fee that scales with parcel weight (Meesho pricing and shipping pages, read 4 Oct 2026); weigh packed sarees before setting prices. Handloom or GI sarees sell through their weaving story, which WhatsApp chats or Instagram reels can tell but search grids cannot.

Bulk sarees: how a first order is sized

  1. Choose fibre, then tariff line. Silk, cotton, polyester, rayon sarees sit on different lines (5007, 5208/5209, 5407, 5408); purchase invoices should carry whichever line you sell on.
  2. Split plain or printed from handloom. Handloom sarees can carry their own line, such as 5208 59 20 “Sarees, Handloom” (DGCIS chapter 52, read 10 Oct 2026); keep them as separate lots.
  3. Spread orders across designs. Ten designs in small numbers teach more about your buyers than one design in depth. Ask each supplier for their minimum in writing; we print none, since minimums are supplier terms, not market rules.

Saree manufacturers vs saree wholesale dealers

A saree manufacturer (weaver, powerloom unit, print house) quotes by fabric plus design. A saree wholesale dealer buys from several makers, then quotes across them. Ask either which HSN line goes on your invoice; compare it with our fibre table. Polyester billed on a cotton line becomes your problem once you resell.

Sarees supplier list

We are building a list of saree suppliers by fabric, because a Surat synthetics wholesaler and a Kolkata handloom dealer share almost nothing beyond the word saree. Every number on it comes from a supplier who asked to be listed.

Your number is used to send the list and nothing else.

Sarees wholesale price: margin left after fees

Saree fabric entries carry 5% GST under CBIC Notification 9/2025-IT(Rate) (silk S.No. 326, woven cotton S.No. 334, man-made filament S.No. 342; in force 22 Sep 2025), so tax stays at 5% whatever a saree costs. Fees are where channels differ. This widget starts from labelled example inputs; replace them with your purchase price, selling price plus return fee from your Supplier Panel.

Same garment, three channels

The numbers below are example inputs. Replace each one with your own: your cost and price, your shipping and return fees from the Meesho Supplier Panel, and the return rates and ad spend from your own orders.

Return rate on each channel (example inputs)

Ad spend per order (example inputs)

Meesho

₹196

Instagram

₹306 on a delivered order

no commission, ads to be found

WhatsAppMOST LEFT

₹300

₹321 on a delivered order

On these example numbers the same piece leaves ₹104 more per order on WhatsApp than on Meesho — which is the argument for choosing the channel before choosing the stock. For the full picture including GST and a target margin, use the break-even calculator.

Wholesale sarees catalogue: what each listing must state

Put fabric names in titles: georgette, cotton, silk or bandhani is what shoppers type. Lead with a drape shot, then border or weave close-up, then blouse piece. State measured length; say whether a blouse piece is included. Use GI names such as Chanderi Sarees or Pochampalli Ikat once your supplier has shown origin. Saree catalogues built this way drop straight into our catalog maker for sarees.

After the trip

Saree drops multiply into photos: 40 designs at 3 shots is 120 images

Drape, border close-up, blouse piece: each saree design needs all three, sized before upload. Drop a folder of saree photos into our bulk resizer; each comes back padded onto white at marketplace size, uncropped, zipped together.

Keep drape shots first in each set; buyers judge sarees by them.

Saree wholesale rate: we print none. Rates compare fairly once four things sit beside them: fibre, tariff line, border type, blouse piece included or not. Put those four into each saree quote request; our wholesale margin calculator then shows what every saree leaves you.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the wholesale saree market in India?

There is no single market: buy by fabric, and for registered sarees by state on IP India’s GI register, e.g. Banaras Brocades and Sarees in Uttar Pradesh, Kancheepuram Silk in Tamil Nadu (checked 23 Oct 2026). City trading in Surat, Kolkata, Jaipur, Delhi has its own market pages here.

Which sarees have a GI tag?

IP India’s register lists saree GIs such as Chanderi Sarees (Madhya Pradesh), Paithani Sarees and Fabrics (Maharashtra), Pochampalli Ikat (Telangana), Baluchari Saree (West Bengal). Our table gives 12 with application numbers.

What GST applies to sarees bought wholesale?

5%: sarees are classified as fabric (silk 5007; cotton within woven cotton 5208–5212, saree lines in 5208, 5209; man-made 5407–5408), which sits in the 5% schedule of CBIC Notification 9/2025-IT(Rate), in force 22 Sep 2025. Full code lists: our saree HSN page.

What is the difference between saree manufacturers and saree wholesale dealers?

A manufacturer weaves or prints sarees, quoting by fabric plus design; a dealer buys from several makers, quoting across them. Ask both which HSN line goes on your invoice.

Do sarees sell better on Meesho or WhatsApp?

Printed everyday sarees suit Meesho, which charges 0% commission but bills return shipping by weight (Meesho supplier pages, 4 Oct 2026); handloom or GI sarees needing explanation suit WhatsApp.

Is kota silk the same as Kota Doria?

Registered GI is Kota Doria (Rajasthan, application 12); “kota silk” is a trade name. Ask your supplier for fibre content, because tariff lines follow fibre: 5007 20 10 needs 85% or more silk.

Saree data rechecked 23 Oct 2026 against IP India’s GI register (PDF), GST portal HSN search, CBIC Notification 9/2025-IT(Rate), plus Meesho’s pricing and shipping pages (read 4 Oct 2026).
